10 Winter Wedding Invitation Ideas

It's getting cold here. Like I actually had to wear a jacket a few days ago. Granted, a few days after that it was almost 80, but that's how it goes this time of year. But, it means you should be full steam ahead if you're planning a winter wedding. Now is the time for you to check out winter wedding invitations and get those ready to be sent to your guests.

A few years ago, it was like pulling teeth to find elegant winter wedding invitations. The majority of them were super corny snowflake wedding invitations. There's a way to do those, though, and companies just weren't doing it right.

Last year, a lot of brands revamped the winter wedding invitation suites, which was great. There are so many options. I put together a list of some great winter wedding invitation ideas so you don't have to hunt for them.

Planning your winter wedding? Get started with these 10 Winter Wedding Invitation Ideas from www.abrideonabudget.com.

Do You Need A Wedding Map?

Chances are, you have a GPS in arm's reach right now. (Is your smart phone close?) And, if you don't, you probably have one in your car. Because of this, I often get asked if you need to include directions in your wedding invitations. Do you need a wedding map when directions just a few button pushes away?

Directions have turned into a cost that brides are hoping to eliminate. Plus, if you have a GPS in your pocket, you're probably going it ask it for directions instead of consulting the card that came with your invitation.

Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

So do you need a directions card?

Simply put, no. You don't need to include it. But honestly, you don't need anything at your wedding except your spouse-to-be. You can argue against any part of your wedding (you don't need to serve dinner; you don't need to give out favors; and you definitely don't need that unity candle. Skip that, please, but keep dinner).

Honestly, though, no. You don't need a directions card, especially if you're like us and book a shuttle to drive your guests to and from the hotel and reception. If your guests aren't driving, they definitely don't need directions. I would (and did), however, replace that with a wedding map.

If your guests are unfamiliar with the area, they can still find their way from the hotel to the venue with a GPS. But they can't find their way around town if they don't know where to go. If they want a snack between the ceremony and reception, or if they just want to go sightseeing, they need help. And you're off being very newly married. You can't help them.

But a wedding map can.

Nicole from Glossie (who designed our full invitation suite) designed us a small map to include with our invitations. It was the size of our RSVP card and had a few landmarks noted on it (the airport, the hotel, the church, the reception venue, and the park where our rehearsal dinner was). We enclosed one with each wedding invitation and mailed it.

Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

Then, Carol from CW Designs, who is the best wedding map designer I know, created a full-size customized wedding map for our wedding welcome bags.
Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

The front was similar to the map in the wedding invitation in that it highlighted the same locations. And that's really important. Even if you don't give your guests directions, you want to give them a sense of where they are. The map that Carol designed us also included our apartment, the restaurant where we got engaged, and a local brewery that we thought our guests would like.

The back of the map, though, was the star.

Our guests were mostly coming from New York to our North Carolina wedding. Many of them had never been to our town before and most were staying for a week. We wanted to help them have the best experience possible.

So Pete and I sat down and went through the (many) restaurants in our area to choose our favorites. We broke them down by cuisine (Mexican, Italian, Southern/BBQ, Tapas, Sandwiches, Pub Food, Seafood, Desserts, and Drinks). We picked our top two restaurants (except for drinks; we went with six there). We had the name of the restaurant and the address under the "What to eat ... " section.

Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

Then, there was a "What to do ... " section where we listed a few of the more interesting tourist locations.

And the final section was "What to know ... " We live in Wilmington, NC, which is dubbed both Hollywood East and Film-ington. Studios film here. A lot. So we mentioned a few TV shows and movies that were filmed here (One Tree Hill, Empire Records, etc.). And then we gave a few other facts (Michael Jordan is from here, for example). We both like to know about places we visit, so this was our way to give some facts to our guests and let them know where they are.

And then, at the very bottom of the map, we let them know how to get free parking downtown. Because who doesn't like free. I sent all the information to Carol and she formatted it and made it look pretty.

Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

The map is way out of my skill set. I probably could format the back of it now, since I'm way better at graphic design than I was four years ago, but a DIY wedding map is something I absolutely have no idea how to do. Sometimes, you need to go to the professionals.

I'm not sure how much of our list our guests actually used (because we had four days of wedding activities, so we did sort of monopolize their time a lot), but I got such compliments on these wedding maps. I never once heard someone say they wished we included a directions card in our invitation, despite the fact that I was adamant on having one, but I did hear a ton of people gush about our wedding maps.

Do you need a wedding map? Get some good advice and answers in this post from www.abrideonabudget.com.

Side note: I actually used the wedding map illustration to create a throw pillow. It was on our futon in the living room for years (first in our apartment, then in our house) until we got a grown up couch and the futon moved upstairs. The pillow moved with it.

Fall Wedding Invitation Ideas

We're in the thick of fall, which means if you're planning a fall wedding, you're looking at invitations now. It can be overwhelming, so I'm here to help. I put together a list of my favorite fall wedding invitation ideas.

For fall wedding invitations, go with browns and branches and lightning bugs (or, fireflies, depending on what part of the world you live in).

You want to also stay towards more rustic fall wedding invitations than ones that are bright and bold (that's better for a summer wedding).

Planning a fall wedding? Check out these Fall Wedding Invitation Ideas from www.abrideonabudget.com.

Fall Tranquility Wedding Invitations

I love these Fall Tranquility Wedding Invitations. The orange leaves really stand out. But it's the sunbeams that are selling me on it. It's just a little pop that is so special.

Everything about this invitation screams fall and really sets the tone for your fall wedding.

Purchase here.

Planning a fall wedding? Check out these Fall Wedding Invitation Ideas from www.abrideonabudget.com.
An Autumn Affair Square Invitations
The back of these An Autumn Affair Square Invitations really makes them stand out. The small black diamonds are just so special. And really, you don't want any part of your invitations to be dull, not even the back. But, keep in mind that you can actually change the color of these, so if the black is too intense for you, choose another color.

The front has copper flowers and gray and black acorns and pine cones, which just screams fall. I love them.

Purchase here.

Fireflies Wedding Invitations
Mason jars were all the rage a few years ago. They've cooled off a little, which means your Fireflies Wedding Invitations will look unique again, not overdone.

Plus, the lightning bugs flying up to the top of the invitation is just so romantic.

Purchase here.

Planning a fall wedding? Check out these Fall Wedding Invitation Ideas from www.abrideonabudget.com.
A Falling of Leaves Gate-fold Invitations
So remember before I said fall invitations stay away from bold colors? These A Falling of Leaves Gate-fold Invitations contradict that. They're bright and bold -- and have falling leaves that are just like the fall foliage you'll see on your wedding day.

And aren't the fall leaves the reason you're choosing fall?

Purchase here.

Planning a fall wedding? Check out these Fall Wedding Invitation Ideas from www.abrideonabudget.com.
Under The Tree Wedding Invitations
I love the softness that the pink brings to these Under The Tree Wedding Invitations. It has the leaves and acorns that scream fall, but then flowers that just add a little spring to it. And it's a way to get in some flowers because there aren't too many options for fall floral wedding invitations.

I love the banner that the sparrow is holding as well. Sparrows are just so sweet.

Purchase here.

Classic Leaves Foldover Pockets
These Classic Leaves Foldover Pockets are so different. The leaves aren't one solid color. So many are incorporated into them that it is more of a mosaic. And that will be beautiful on your guests' fridges.

The insert cards are all different colors too, which is a really unique feature.

Request Free Wedding Samples From MagnetStreet Weddings

Wedding invitations are so expensive. When we were planning, I read that the average cost was $5 an invite. When you're spending that much money, you want to make sure that they are perfect and worth every penny. That's why ordering free wedding samples from MagnetStreet Weddings is so crucial.

Deciding on your wedding stationery? You can get free wedding samples from MagnetStreet Weddings. Head over to www.abrideonabudget.com to find out how.

MagnetStreet Weddings will allow you to request free wedding samples.

You have two options of sample packs to order. There's the Wedding Essentials Planning Kit, which includes various wedding stationery samples. Then, there's the custom samples where you can personalize any piece with your colors and text -- for free.

Deciding on your wedding stationery? You can get free wedding samples from MagnetStreet Weddings. Head over to www.abrideonabudget.com to find out how.
What I absolutely love is that you can also receive a set of swatch cards in your colors. You can create your palette and have it sent to you. I can't stress enough how important that is.

When you're planning, you choose your colors. And those are yours. Everything in your wedding will somehow come back to those colors. Your bridesmaids dresses, your flowers, the groom's tie, your favors ... your colors will be found in all of that. So you want to see your colors before you order invitations and find out that maybe the color isn't exactly what you were thinking. Because if that invitation color is off, you may have to revamp everything that follows.

The struggle is real, guys.

The only downfall of these free wedding samples, if you can call it that, is MagnetStreet has so many options. And you can only choose up to $20 worth of free wedding samples. So, if you're torn and can't decide, ask your mom or your maid of honor to request a couple for you.

Deciding on your wedding stationery? You can get free wedding samples from MagnetStreet Weddings. Head over to www.abrideonabudget.com to find out how.

You can personalize any piece of MagnetStreet's stationery -- save the dates, invitations, programs, reception items, and thank you cards. You're able to play around with the site's free wedding invitation templates, customize the cards exactly how you think you want them, and then, add the items to your cart.

At checkout, enter the code WED20SAMPLES to get up to $20 worth of fully personalized samples.

When they arrive, you'll be able to decide if you actually like them and how they look, or if you want to choose a different stationery package.

We actually used MagnetStreet for our wedding programs and our thank you cards. We were able to match our exact colors and styles since we ordered both from the same website. And that's a big help. If you're like me and you want everything to be coordinated, you want a site where you can get matching save the date and wedding invitations. Or, in our case, matching programs and thank you cards.

It just makes everything look so much more cohesive.

10 Beach Wedding Invitation Ideas

I had such a hard time picking the invitations for our beach wedding. I looked at dozens (a hundred beach wedding invitation ideas, maybe) -- and ended up having ours designed professionally. Going through them all, though, it was so time consuming.

I don't want you to waste your time, so I'm helping you out. I put together a list of some of my favorite unique beach wedding invitations. They are in a list of ten below, and then you can scroll a little to see the image and the reasons why it made the list. Just click through the links and you can just go straight to the invitation, personalize it, and place your order. Super easy.

And don't worry. I actually go through these lists and update them every six months or so to make sure the wedding invitation ideas I post are actually in stock still. The worst thing would be to fall in love with one and then find it's not available.

Flip Flops In The Sun
Flip flops are such a perfect beach wedding image. We actually had fondant flip flops on the top of our wedding cake. So cute! So these flip flops in the sun wedding invitations are perfect for your beach wedding.

The enclosure cards also have a cute cartoon wave to them, making them just a little more special.

Palm Wedding Invitations
When I go to Florida, the thing I always notice most are the palm trees. We don't have them here in North Carolina, despite living so close to the beach. So if you're having a beach wedding, these palm wedding invitations will really have your guests ready for the sand and sun.

Plus, there's something that I love about the banner wrapped around the tree, like the wind took it and the palm caught it.

Sunset Silhouette
These Sunset Silhouette pocket invitations are the most important to my heart on this entire list. See, there are more than just invitations and enclosure cards in this design. You can also use it for your wedding programs. And we did use these for our wedding programs.

We even cut one up and used it in our card box.

Passport Wedding Invitations
Our wedding invitations had a plane ticket in them, since it was a destination wedding for everyone but us. These passport wedding invitations were the closest I could find, without hiring a designer.

I would suggest picking up a corner rounder paper punch and rounding these corners to look more like a boarding pass.

Kraft And Ivory Beach Wedding Invitation
This Kraft And Ivory Beach Wedding Invitation is beautiful, but I would be worried about all the embellishments falling off in the mail. So I'm super excited that you can actually order a sample of this before placing an entire order.

Honestly, I think more invitation companies should do that.

Seashells And Starfish Wedding Invitation
Don't mind that this Seashells And Starfish Wedding Invitation has bridal shower text on it. What's great about this one is that you can customize the text to say whatever you want it to say.

So, as long as you like the design, go with this invitation.

Only Fish For Me
I'm in love with this Only Fish For Me beach wedding invitation. It's so playful and cute, but still really classy.

It also really meshes well with the Two Less Fish In The Sea craft I created a long time ago.

Painted Sea Wedding Invitation
I'm obsessed with this Painted Sea Wedding Invitation. Ob-sessed. The ombre of the water, the subtlety of the words on the beach, I just can't with any of it. It's incredible.

And you want that sort of effect when you send your wedding invitations, don't you?

Purchase here.

I love the foil accents in this Beach Union Wedding Invitation, so of course it had to be on this list. I don't love that the image of this is actually a gif and swaying side to side, but you need it in order to see the shine.

And, really, that's what your guests will be doing when your invitation comes in the mail.

Purchase here.

Planning your beach wedding? You'll love these unique beach wedding invitations from www.abrideonabudget.com.
Perfect Watercolor Wedding Invitation
Check out the texture in this Perfect Watercolor Wedding Invitation. It just looks like it would feel amazing when your guests take it out of the envelope. I love it just for that.

If you love it, but blue's not your thing, you can actually change it to purple or the most perfect salmon.

Purchase here.

Planning your beach wedding? You'll love these unique beach wedding invitations from www.abrideonabudget.com.
Our Actual Wedding Invitations
As an added bonus, I'm including our actual wedding invitations because I just think they're the most perfect beach wedding invitations of all. I had them designed for us, then I had the components printed locally.

I did spend 13 hours between cutting the components, stuffing the envelopes, and stamping them, but it was absolutely worth it.

Check out more images of our wedding invitations here.

When you're picking your beach wedding invitations, there are a few things to keep in mind. Make sure to choose beach wedding invitations with RSVP cards that match. It doesn't make much sense to choose a beautiful invitation that matches your theme and then have some plain white enclosure cards.

Also,

DIY Wedding Invitation Ornament

I'm always looking to ways to preserve wedding memories, especially ones that don't take up that much room. I mean, if it was up to me, I would have every piece of wedding stationery on display in our living room, but that's a little impractical.

I put together a DIY ornament tutorial to turn your wedding flowers into a Christmas ornament. While I was working on it, I also created a second DIY ornament tutorial: this DIY Wedding Invitation Ornament tutorial.

Looking for something festive to do with your wedding invitation? Turn it into a DIY Wedding Invitation Ornament with this tutorial on www.abrideonabudget.com.

DIY Wedding Invitation Ornament

Now, before we get started, it should be noted that I only have one copy of our invitation for our scrapbook, so I didn't use it. Instead, I used the do not disturb signs I created, but you'll get the idea.

What You'll Need:

What You'll Do:

Cut the invitation into quarter-inch strips.

Wrap them around a pen to curl (I stuck one end under the cap to hold it in place).

Put the curled strip into the glass ornament.

Continue until the ornament is filled. Then, put the top back on.

Tie a piece of ribbon to the top. This is what you'll use to hang it.

This was really simple and just came out beautifully.

This actually would be a really cute idea for when you have kids. You could make one a with your kid's birthday party invitation every year, then give him or her a full set on his or her eighteenth birthday. I would have absolutely loved this, so I'm sure your (future) children will too.

10 Vineyard Wedding Invitation Ideas

I absolutely love the idea of a vineyard wedding. My friend's friend had one once and the save the date was a cork coaster. Ever since then, I thought it was such a great theme. A vineyard wedding means you'll definitely have great wine to serve. Plus, you can get away with just wine. That definitely cuts down on your bar tab. And favors are so easy. Go with wine glasses and your guests can actually use their favors immediately at your wedding. Brilliant.

If you're planning a vineyard wedding, you want to set the theme with your vineyard wedding invitations. Think wine glasses, vines, crimson ... basically anything from our list below.

Wedding Invitation Suites (and what needs to be included in your wedding invitation)

A Bride On A Budget received these items for review. All thoughts and opinions belong to ABOAB.

Wedding invitations are not like other invitations. If you have another party, you just hand write an invitation, leave your phone number as the RSVP, and wait for the calls to come in (or not, if you wrote "regrets only"). As long as you have the date, time, and include the "why" part of the invitation, you're good.

But with wedding invitations, the actual invitation is just one component.

Your wedding invitation isn't the only component of your wedding invitation suites. This post from www.abrideonabudget.com tells you all about your wedding invitation suites and what needs to be included in your wedding invitation.

I got a chance to check out a few pre-printed invitation suites from Paper Source. These are not actual weddings that are happening, so don't pack your bags and try to crash the wedding of Deborah and Brandon because, well, you won't get there (partially because these are probably fictitious people but mostly because the Riviera Palm Springs isn't even at the location on the invitation -- thank you Google).

When looking at invitations, guests aren't just looking at the main piece of paper. They also have to look at all the "accessories" (like the RSVP cards and envelopes). Together, the full line is called a "suite" not a "set" (you can throw that around in your circle to feel special).

Wedding Invitation Suites (and what needs to be included in your wedding invitation)

Let's start with the actual invitation. What do you need to say on it?

Wedding invitation text checklist:

  • Bride's and groom's name
  • Wedding date
  • Location of ceremony and/or reception (name and address)
  • Time (of ceremony and/or reception)
  • Parents names (if they are helping to pay for/host the wedding)

Wedding RSVP text checklist:

  • Literally, the letters RSVP
  • The RSVP date (traditionally one month before your wedding)
  • A line for guests to write their names (it often begins with M)
  • A place to circle/check yes or no
  • A place to write number attending
It is proper etiquette to address the RSVP envelope to yourself and add proper postage (most RSVP cards will require one standard stamp, but if you have a very small RSVP card, it will need to be hand sorted and will require extra postage).

I had no desire to hand write our return address on the RSVP cards, so I ordered return address labels with our names and address to just stick on the front of RSVP envelope. If you search a bit, you can find return address labels that look more like stickers. Get those because they're bigger and will take up more real estate on the envelopes. Regular address labels are a bit too small to fit in the middle of the card.

If you are inviting out of town guests, you want to set aside a block of rooms at a local hotel (most hotels will give you a discounted room rate and will not hold you responsible for unblocked rooms, especially since a month or so prior to the wedding, they will release any unblocked rooms to the public). If you have rooms blocked, include the hotel information (name, address, contact info, any group codes) in the invitation.

If you are only blocking rooms at one hotel, you could also include directions from the hotel to the venue. Remember, though, the more papers you add into your invitation, the heavier it will be. Save yourself a little postage and stick the directions in the wedding welcome bags.

Wedding invitation component checklist:

  • Wedding invitation
  • RSVP card
  • Self-addressed stamped envelope (to fit RSVP card)
  • Directions or map (optional)
  • Hotel information sheet from the hotel (optional)
  • Rehearsal dinner invitation (optional and only if you are inviting the entire guest list to the rehearsal dinner)

What not to include:

  • Registry information

Be aware of how much your postage will be. We've addressed this previously, but in case you missed that post, envelopes that are either oversized, undersized, or heavy will change your postage price. Plus, keep in mind that traditional-size envelopes will be sent through a sorter. And that sorter doesn't care if you have a very pretty bow on the front of the invitation that might rip through the envelope. Nope. It will just sort the mail and your guests may receive something that looks like it was used as a bullet proof vest.

Personally, I've received way too many invitations where the bow/jewel/bead, etc. punctured the envelope. This is (generally) the first indication I'm getting of how your wedding will be ... and unless it's in some rough neighborhood, a bullet hole isn't the introduction I want. My suggestion? Keep the BeDazzler back in the early 90's and go with a flat invitation.

My other suggestion is don't hand write your return address on your actual invitations. One of the best things we did was invest in an address stamp. You can get them in ink or as an embosser. The embosser is more expensive, but you don't need to purchase ink. Depending on how often you plan on using this, you might want to pay more now and save later.

We used our address stamp for our save the dates, our bridal shower thank you cards, our invitations. our wedding thank you cards, and two sets of Christmas cards (then we moved). When I created ours, I made sure to only use our first names so that we would be able to keep and use it for as long as we lived in the apartment.

We've gotten so much use out of ours that I've decided from now on, an address stamp will be my gift at engagement parties. Best. Investment. Ever. If you don't believe me, you can check out my post: 5 Times You'll Wish You Had A Stamp During Wedding Planning.
